Triple Falls from Horsetail Falls Trailhead(edit)

Overview

This stunning hike in Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness of the Columbia River Gorge passes SIX waterfalls and crosses the spectacular Oneonta Gorge. As a very scenic, yet relatively short hike, it is extremely popular. The narrow trail has many switchbacks and passes along sheer dropoffs down to Oneonta Creek, but is generally not very steep.

The Horsetail Falls Trail #438 starts at Horsetail Falls, passes behind Ponytail Falls and then contours from Horsetail Creek to Oneonta Creek along a bluff in the Columbia River Gorge. Reaching Oneonta Creek, there are views of Oneonta Gorge, Oneonta Falls, Middle Oneonta Falls, and Upper Oneonta Falls. After more switchbacks the trail reaches a junction with the Oneonta Trail #424, an option for a return loop. Continuing up, this hike ends at a cliff-side viewpoint of Triple Falls, although the trail continues.

This hike is also popular in winter. Microspikes are recommended.

Getting Started

The Horsetail Falls Trailhead is along the Historic Columbia River Gorge Highway, 1.5 miles west of I-84 exit 35 or 5.9 miles east of exit 28. The trailhead has no facilities and fills quickly with both hikers and waterfall tourists. If full, there is additional parking west.

Taking Children

Not appropriate of young children due to narrow trail and exposure to dropoffs.
