Overview

The Wahkeena Trail in Oregon offers various hiking options depending on fitness level, including shorter hikes to Wahkeena Falls and Fairy Falls, or a longer hike to Devils Rest, an elevated forested area. The trail provides views of waterfalls, Columbia River Gorge, and old-growth trees in the Wahkeena Bowl. Hikers can choose to return the way they came or complete a loop using the Angels Rest Trail, although parts of the loop may be unmaintained due to the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire.

The hike begins at the viewing plaza above the highway parking area. Hikers can enjoy the tiers of Wahkeena Falls and cross a footbridge over Wahkeena Creek. The trail ascends through Douglas-fir and hemlock woods, passes the stone bridge in front of the falls, and continues with switchbacks up to Lemmons Viewpoint. From the viewpoint, hikers can admire views of the Columbia River, Bonneville Dam, and surrounding mountains.

Continuing on the trail, hikers cross footbridges, pass Fairy Falls, and reach the Vista Point Trail junction. Following the Vista Point Trail, they can enjoy views of Prindle Cliffs, Silver Star Mountain, and the delta of Wahkeena Creek. The trail then leads to the Devils Rest Trail junction, where hikers can hike along the rim of the Wahkeena Bowl, pass springs, and reach the largely unburned summit of Devils Rest. Hikers can return via the same route or continue on a loop trail.

For the loop option, hikers descend from Devils Rest, passing through various landscapes including alder and hemlock forests, salmonberry thickets, and vine maple/alder thickets. They pass the Mist Creek Footbridge, junctions with the Primrose Path and Devils Fork Trail, and eventually reach the Wahkeena-Angels Rest Trail Junction. From there, they continue down the Wahkeena Trail to return to their starting point.

The Wahkeena Trail offers a range of scenic experiences, including waterfalls, viewpoints, and diverse forested landscapes, making it a rewarding hiking option for outdoor enthusiasts.
