Illawong Swing Bridge (Return)
Overview
This is a easy out and back trail to Illawong swing bridge in Kosciuszko National Park.
This trail goes by Illawong Bridge Track and Illawong Lodge.
Along the way, you will cross Blue Cow Creek over a steel bridge. On the right side of the bridge, note the old flying fox that was fist built by the Illawong Ski Tourers in 1961 and replaced in 1979. It was used to cross the creek until 2011, when the current steel bridge was built. The flying fox is included in the NPWS Historic Places Register.
Illawong Lodge is operated by Illawong Ski Tourers for the benefit of their members. In winter, the lodge is used by members as a base for back-country skiing. Below the lodge, there is also an emergency shelter, which can be used by skiers or hikers in distress.
In winter, the trail is covered by snow and snow shoes or touring skis are required.
Getting Started
There is a small car park at the start of Illawong Walk (near the Guthega Pump Station). If that car park is full, then park opposite the Guthega Centre, at the bottom of the Car Park Double Chair Lift.
In winter, you need to park in the main car park, below the Car Park Double Chair Lift, as the road past that point is covered by snow and closed to traffic.
Taking Children
The walk is suitable for young children when not covered by snow.
