Best Hiking Trails in Superstition Wilderness

Overview

A short drive from Phoenix, the Superstition Wilderness Area is a hiking paradise that harbors rumors of hidden treasures and lost gold mines. You'll find endless canyons, dense brushland, chaparral, and a few ponderosa pine. One of the most prominent features in the area is Weaver's Needle, a striking rock formation viewable from a handful of trails. Keep an eye out for rock climbers on the eroded volcanic plug.

Getting Started

Discover many of the hikes and lakes in the area by foot or on horseback. Many trails can be combined to create loop hikes. Consider exploring the short Hieroglyph Trail or the slightly longer Boulder Canyon Trail #103, both popular options.

The busy Peralta Trailhead is a great starting point to find a hike. Those looking for more of a remote experience can navigate toward the eastern, higher-elevation sections, where cooler temperatures provide relief from the summer heat.

When to Go

Those prepared for desert heat and scarce water in the summer—or surprise snow storms in the winter—can find adventure in the Superstitions' rugged terrain year-round. However, because temperatures tend to be milder during winter, the Superstition area is one of the top places Tonto National Forest rangers recommend for hiking during the winter months.
