Black crater hike
Mom suggested that we hike the black crater trail, knowing that it was burned over in 2017. Indeed, the fire was very intense and the lower 2/3 of the trail ran through nothing but grey skeletons of trees that were completely killed by the fire. The upper third once you get into the mountain Hemlock forest, was not burned and was just as nice as ever. I made sure that the day we were going on the hike was a Westerly wind day so we did not have to worry about smoke from the wildfires in Eastern Oregon. It was quite windy on top and i just about lost my hat when hiking down around the southern lip of the crater from the Summit. I arrived at the top about 45 minutes before Mom did so I had quite a bit of time to look around and enjoy the view. It was a tough long hike, something we had not done in a while. We were both pretty tired at the end. That night I was fine, but the following night I ended up with a very serious bout of vertigo. I had not been feeling very stable since my bout of influenza and we think that maybe the flu had inflamed my inner ears and that the hike could have triggered a response. It was nice and cool on the hike in the 50s up on top and about 70 or so down below.
