Overview

This is a moderate loop trail around the Three Sisters and numerous other points in the Three Sisters Wilderness. Alpine meadows, waterfalls, lava fields, glaciers and glacier lakes are abundant. The lava field are on the on the western side of the loop that follows the Pacific Crest Trail. On the eastern side you will walk through forests of previous burns. Water is available but you need to ensure that you plan accordingly as some stretches may be long depending on how much capacity you carry.

This trail goes by North Matthieu Lake, South Matthieu Lake, Park Meadow, Green Lakes, Reese Lake, and Yapoah Crater.

Getting Started

Lava Camp Lake trailhead is adjacent to Lava Lake campground is located near McKenzie Pass.

The trailhead has parking for numerous vehicles and wide shoulders for additional parking. There is a Vault toilet that is shared with the trailhead and the Campground. Campground has 12 sites primarily around the Lake.

Starting in 2021 a Central Cascades Wilderness Permit will be required for hikes in the Three Sisters Wilderness and adjacent areas. The permit can be purchased via recreation.gov
