South Matthieu Lake Loop via Pacific Crest Trail and North Matthieu Lake Trail #4062
Overview
This is a moderate loop trail to South Matthieu Lake in Deschutes National Forest.
This trail goes by North Matthieu Lake.
The hike was significantly impacted by the 2017 wildfire that ravaged much of the Three Sisters Wilderness. The hike to the two lakes is relatively unaffected, but the return route that partially uses the PCT goes through forest that was significantly burned and so is very open with a lot of charred wood on the ground. The lakes are beautiful, especially the South Lake, and if you are tough enough, great for swimming. A few meters past the South Lake is a small hill that is steep and takes about 15-20 minutes to climb. It is a great lunch spot, but more significantly, you have a view of every major peak in the region from there, and on a clear day, every major peak in Oregon.
