Little Sam's Knob Loop via Sam Knob and Flat Laurel Creek Trail/Old Railroad Grade
Overview
This is a relatively easy and family friendly hike in Pisgah Ranger District, with beautiful long-distance views. It features a trip to the summit of Sam's Knob, a peak that is distinct throughout the area, due to its "double-humped" appearance.
From the trailhead at the Sam's Knob Parking Lot, you will hike a short ways through open meadows, which are full of wildflowers in season. After close to a mile, a trail to the right leads to the climb to the top of Sam's Knob. There are some steep and rocky sections, but with patience and care they can be navigated by hikers of most ages and skill levels.
After descending Sam's Knob, continue the counter-clockwise loop through a variety of river, meadow, and forest trails before returning back to the parking area.
Getting Started
Park at the paved parking lot at the end of FR 816, off of the Blue Ridge Parkway:

This lot gets extremely full, so best to arrive early on weekends and nice weather days, in order to get a spot.
Taking Children
This is a good hike for children, if watched carefully, as well as leashed dogs.
