Overview

This is a difficult one way trail in Pisgah National Forest.

The hike follows the Art Loeb Trail from Gloucester Gap over Pilot Mountain. This is a steep climb, but the views from Pilot Mtn are stunning.

The trail continues past Deep Gap Shelter and Sassafras Mountain, to add additional distance and elevation gain to your hike, before turning around.

There are a number of other hike combinations available with this hike, such as descending at Farlow Gap to the Daniel Ridge area, or continuing on the Art Loeb Trail up to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Getting Started

The hike begins at Gloucester Gap, which is the intersection of gravel roads. There is very little parking available, so minimizing vehicles is advised.

Taking Children

This hike has some steep and challenging climbs which would not be suitable for most young children.
