Marmot Trail, Whistler
July 4 2025.
Went up on the Village gondola, then across on tje Peak to Peak, then down on the Blackcomb Gondola.
Whistler Village Gondola closes at 5:15. Blackcomb Gondola closes 5:15. Peak to Peak closes at 4:00. The Whistler people are generally clueless. When we bought Lee's season pass, two people told us that the Village lift would close at 7:30. The site itself says it closes at 8pm, Fri to Sunday, after June 20. The person operating the Peak to Peak could not say anything coherent but at the end said "if you are here at 7:00, I guarantee you can get down" (even though the electronic sign at her location said 5:15). She said that the lift is available for people that eat at the restaurant and mentioned "the face" several times. When we came down on the 5:15 Blackcomb Gondola (toilets already closed) we noticed four cars full of people, including kids, in helmets and other climbing gear just arriving. The point being that the lifts seem to continue, for particular groups, after the stated closure time. Confusing and strange - it's a big deal, after all, if you can't get down!
The tops of both gondolas, Roundhouse on Whistler, and Rendezvous on Blackcomb, are an absolute shambles. Ugly as sin. No one has shown the slightest interest in preserving a natural landscape. Roads are cut everywhere, the land under the innumerable chairlifts and the ski slopes themselves is barren clearcut. Snow is required to make this destruction palatable.
We did a mini hike, first loop of the Decker Tarn hike (on Blackcomb peak). The hike starts as a broad mini road; they must have hauled hundreds of truckloads of chipped stone up here! Becomes more of a trail (although with more chipped stone) after the first Y. Tons of people. The surrounding mountains are beautiful, but the obvious scenery is Whistler Mountain with a dozen or more ski slopes cut into its side.
