Overview
This is one of Indiana's longest backpacking trails. It begins in the north in the Morgan/Monroe State Forest and transitions into the Yellowwood State Forest to the south. It ends at the boundary with the Hoosier National Forest. Camping is only permitted in a few areas. 1) in the northern part of the trail (Morgan/Monroe State Forest) east of low gap road, at a shelter about 1/3 of way through the hike or at the yellowwood campground. Water in the streams is intermittent and likely won't be available in the fall.
Getting Started
The northern trailhead is at the Morgan/Monroe State Forest Offices and the Southern Trailhead is just south of Crooked Creek lake in Yellowwood State Forest South of IN-46.

beautiful and challenging. my friend and i went out from the dnr fire headquarters on a thursday around 11:30am and finished Saturday around 3pm and the crooked creek boat ramp. i used the hoosier hikers council guide beforehand to plan and the map on the hike. the portion that they claim is closed is very easily passable, but you trespass over train tracks. we stayed at the fox den shelter night 1 and the black gym campgrounds at yellowood night 2. our first day was around 14 miles, the second around 16 and the third was 10. rather than going on the west side of yellowood lake on day 2 we went on the east side to get to the campground easier, otherwise day two would have been around 20
miles. we went during the first few calendar days of spring and saw lots of wildflower and budding trees. hiking with a 50lb pack and little training was very challenging. my friend and i are both active and this left both of us very sore. i would reccomend this hike, it felt like a journey and accomplishment. great time overall :)
