Ramona Falls Loop via Sandy River Trail #770
Overview
This is a moderate loop trail to Ramona Falls in Mount Hood National Forest. You'll start off hiking along the Sandy River, which you'll need to cross a few miles in. There is no bridge, so you'll either need to ford the river or find an area to cross with rocks, downed trees, etc. Be very careful as the river can be moving deceiving quickly, and more than 1 person has been swept away and died here before. Once you cross the river there's a loop, most hikers will go to right and come back around on the left spur. The right spur is a bit more sparse, whereas the left spur is much more lush and follows a stream. Once you get to Ramona Falls, you won't be disappointed. It's a beautiful cascading wide waterfall, and there's a footbridge directly in front of it. Take the other loop on the way out to see some scenery you haven't yet seen.
Getting Started
The road to Ramona Falls isn't very rough, and the parking lot is quite large. It's a frequent spot for break-ins due to this, so make sure you don't leave any valuables sitting out in your car.
The trail starts at the Ramona Falls Trailhead. From Portland take Highway 26 to Zigzag. Turn north on Lolo Pass Road, continue for 4 miles, turn east onto FR 1825 for 0.6 miles, cross a bridge, continue 1.7 miles, bear left onto FR 1825-100, drive 0.3 miles, turn left onto FR 1825-024 for 0.2 miles.
There is a very large parking lot and may have a portapotty.
Taking Children
Not appropriate for children due to the Sandy River crossing.
