Overview

Silver Star Mountain Loop via Ed’s Trail

Explore this 4.7-mile loop near Yacolt, Washington. Rated moderate, this route offers a rewarding climb with panoramic views and takes most hikers a few hours to complete. It's a popular destination from May through November, so expect to share the trail with others. Dogs are welcome, but must remain on leash.

Silver Star Mountain is one of the best 360 degree summits within a day's drive of Portland, boasting a rocky, exposed vista to five major Cascade volcanoes. It is a great wildflower area in the spring (mid June), featuring meadows abundant with avalanche lilies and beargrass blooms.

Trail Overview
This scenic loop begins with a climb along the Old Silver Star Trail, merging into Ed’s Trail, a rugged ridge route known for its wildflowers, rock scrambles, and exposed ridgelines. After summiting Silver Star Mountain at over 4,000 feet, the route returns via the Silver Star Trail, completing the loop.

Highlights

Expansive views of Mount Hood, St. Helens, Adams, and Rainier.

Alpine wildflowers in bloom from late spring through summer.

Exposed ridgelines with sweeping vistas throughout.

A shorter loop option with big summit payoff.

Getting Started

Trailhead Access Update
Important: Access to the trailhead requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle. The road is steep, rocky, and severely rutted, especially early in the season.

As of June 2025, the U.S. Forest Service has closed the road for summer maintenance in an effort to improve access. This route has long been in poor condition and has only deteriorated over time. The current work aims to restore safe and reliable access to the Ed’s Trailhead, which has been nearly inaccessible for many vehicles in recent years.

Check with the Gifford Pinchot National Forest for current closure status and updates before planning your trip.

This is a superb hike, but be warned: the road getting there isn't just "bad," it's barely even a road. It looks like it has been carpet-bombed in many places. Only really rugged vehicles with high clearance can even make it to the trailhead. If you have just a regular car, like I do, be prepared to park 2 miles down the service road and have an uphill slog to the trailhead.
