Overview
This easy 2-mile loop in Joshua Tree National Park has classic desert scenery without a big climb. The trail winds through rounded granite formations, sandy washes, and clusters of Joshua trees. The namesake Split Rock, a massive boulder cracked cleanly in two, is by the trailhead, first encountered if hiking CCW. There are gradual ups and downs along the loop, but it is not strenuous.
To extend the hike, take Face Rock Trail at the southern end of the loop to Face Rock, Skull Rock, and loop back along the Discovery Trail. This adds ~1.5 miles to the hike.
Getting Started
Head east on Park Boulevard 2.2 miles from the junction with Pinto Basin Road. Then north 0.6 miles to the Split Rock Picnic Area and Trailhead.
Taking Children
Nice trail for pre-teens and older.
