Overview

The Larch Mountain trail in Oregon offers a relatively forgiving hike of approximately 4,000 feet in elevation gain, making it suitable for those in decent shape. The trail leads to Sherrard Point, a volcanic plug atop Larch Mountain, which provides expansive views of the west Gorge area. The hike showcases old-growth Douglas-firs, hemlocks, and various Gorge blooms during the summer.

The lower 4 1/2 miles of the trail were affected by the 2017 Eagle Creek Fire, resulting in burned-out understory and areas of crown fire. The Larch Mountain Trail passes through the westernmost part of the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness, and a car shuttle option allows for a seven-mile traverse hike.

The trail begins at Multnomah Falls Lodge, offering a picturesque view of both the lower and main tiers of Multnomah Falls and the Benson Bridge. From there, the trail gradually ascends with switchbacks, providing open views of Multnomah Falls, Columbia River, and the scorched understory caused by the fire.

The hike continues along Multnomah Creek, passing Dutchman Falls, Wiesendanger Falls, and Ecola Falls. The trail enters a mossy forest undamaged by the fire and crosses the East and West Forks of Multnomah Creek. It then climbs up the west side of the Larch Mountain Crater, showcasing the effects of the intense fire. Finally, hikers reach Sherrard Point, where they can enjoy panoramic views of the Columbia River, Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, and other surrounding peaks.

Overall, the Larch Mountain trail offers a rewarding hiking experience with diverse landscapes, waterfalls, and impressive viewpoints along the way.

Getting Started

There are two trailheads:

Drive east from Portland on Interstate 84 to Exit 31 near Mile 31. This exit is accessible from I-84 in either direction. Walk under the footbridge to Multnomah Falls Lodge.
Alternatively, exit I-84 at the Bridal Veil Exit (28) and drive the Historic Columbia River Highway eastward to the Multnomah Falls Lodge parking area.

The trail from Multnomah Lodge to Larch Mountain was just opened early November 2018 after the fire damage was cleared from a year ago. The fire damage was extensive to the lower half of the trail. The trail was mostly cleared of rock slides and fallen trees with just a short area after the bridge at 2 miles from the lodge. This was mostly small trees and shrubs blocking the trail to pick your way through or go around. It was nice to see all of the falls again but many of the views were altered by the burned trees and fallen debris.
