Overview

Red Mountain Open Space is a protected area in Colorado. Several miles away from everything you will find yourself at Red Mountain. Open yearly from March 1st through November 30th. Trails are open to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riders; full description available at the parking lot kiosk or Larimer county's website. You can hike all the way to Wyoming or over to the adjacent Soapstone Prairie Natural Area. There are at least 4 distinct trail loops within red mountain to choose from. I would presume there to be rattlesnakes present here at almost any time it is open due to the style of terrain. The trail is all singletrack and some wash basins which are usually dry. Bent rock canyon and its multi-layered cliffs along sand creek is quite impressive to say the least. The only signs of infrastructure are some water wells and various towers off in the distance. Remember, it is illegal to remove or alter any culturally significant artifacts located within the park.

Getting Started

Self explanatory parking and trail access plus a park kiosk for detailed information and trail signage. Picnic shelter and bathrooms at the parking lot, no shelter or potable water on the trail, although you will find flowing creeks in certain areas.

    Sunday Lunch Activity
A hidden gem for hikers, trail runners and mountain bikers in CO. No matter which trail you hit, you’re seeing awesome views. Trail is rocky enough for fun obstacles but you’re not fighting to maneuver boulders every 5 feet. You are completely exposed so bring water and sun screen. The best part? No matter what day of week or time, there are less than 5 cars in the parking lot.

Very nice weather and dry conditions in mid March. The beautiful scenery makes this a pleasure in cooler weather as there is no shade to speak of here. It feels like a true wilderness with no signs of infrastructure for miles. The washes were dry and the usual creeks had a small amount of water in them, no danger of mud or getting soaked feet.
