Really cool area for hiking and backpacking. We ran into very few people until we got to Cinder Cone (esp. considering it was a holiday weekend). Camping is allowed almost anywhere you want to post up (with a few restrictions). FYI - if you’re backpacking, the loop around cluster lake was hit really hard by the wildfires last year - trees are in bad shape and serious risk for collapse. It was very cool to be hiking through this area and the lake water was still fine to drink, etc. but it didn’t feel safe to camp until we got to little bear lake bc of the falling trees.

Beautiful views from the top. Did this hike in August 2017 and there was snow on the top still.

We went in late October before they had any snow for the year and it was great. We didn't leave until the afternoon. There were only a few other hikers out at this time of the year. We understand it is a weather gamble this time of year, but if you get lucky, it is a great experience.
