Overview

This is a easy out and back trail in Thornewood Open Space Preserve.

This trail has an optional spur to Schilling Lake (not included on the map), the highlight is the redwood grove along the Bridle Trail. If you park in the main parking lot off of La Honda Road you'll have a fairly flat walk along the Schilling Lake Trail. At the junction of the Bridle Trail you can continue to a view of the water (not much of a view actually), or skip that part and head down the Bridle Trail. It's all downhill, almost all through redwoods, with and endpoint at Old La Honda Road.

Alternately, you can park by the side of Old La Honda Road and walk a mile up into the redwoods, then decide whether or not to skip the Schilling Lake Trail.

Getting Started

Watch for the sign along La Honda Road (Hwy 84) and drive in to the small parking lot. Park map available.

Taking Children

Rated 7 of 10 for children. The trail is pretty easy, but there's a 300' elevation change that may tax the easily bored or tired.

Thornewood OpenSpace don't have many trails, but the Bridle Train goes through a beautiful redwood grove and make the visit worthwhile. I stopped here for the first time on the way home from La Honda Open Space. It's pretty easy to drive past and not notice. I hiked to Schilling Lake first (althoughtit's hardly a "lake"), then went down the Bridle Trail on the way back. It's only a mile, downhill all the way, ending at Old La Honda Road. The trails were in good shape in spite of recent rain, only a little muddy on the way down. I'd recommend this for anyone wanting a great view of redwoods but not wanting to hike too far.

This just about covers all the trails in the preserve. The Bridle Trail is the big draw, gorgeous redwoods!
