Overview

This is a moderate loop trail in Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve.

This trail goes by Borel Hill, Ancient Oaks Trail, Russian Ridge OSP Loop, and Bay Area Ridge Trail

Getting Started

There's usually ample parking in the Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve's Alpine Rd parking lot, where there is a restroom as well. Most of the trails are exposed, and recently performed trail work created more comfortable hiking surfaces when the rains begin. The views are always superb - from the ocean to the bay, from wooded to bare mountains. Sometimes one can spot a coyote or two roaming the trails, usually closer to the Eagle Scouts' built platform (near the communications tower at the north end of the preserve).

These trails are suitable for children, either hiking or biking, with their parents.

A lovely preserve to hike at when the temperatures are not very high, as most of the trails are fully exposed to the sun. From the parking lot, one can hike either short or long distances. for a longer route, hike down to Mindego Hill, then back up to complete a loop before returning to the parking lot. A longer hike yet can be had by crossing Alpine Rd, either through the short tunnel to the east of the parking lot, or crossing the road. Both of these will lead you to either side of the Alpine Pond in the Skyline Open Space Preserve, where you may continue to explore other trails by hiking south towards Long Ridge Open Space Preserve and beyond.
