Overview

This is a moderate out and back trail or loop trail in Franklin Canyon Park in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

Getting Started

Look at the notes description for general information about Franklin Canyon Park: https://www.gaiagps.com/hike/united-states/california/franklin-canyon-park/

The entrance to the park is located at Coldwater Canyon and Mulholland drives. You'll take Franklin Canyon drive into the park. There are no access or parking fees.

The lower lake and access road are fenced off, so there is no access that way.

Some of the street in the lower part of Franklin Canyon are one way so you might have to loop around to drive to the trail head. There is parking on the street at the trail head. However there is a parking lot and restrooms further down on Lake drive.

For the hike once you leave Lake the shade goes away and you'll be walking though hilly sparse areas, there are lots of offshoot trails and options. You can make a loop by coming down and crossing over Lake drive (at the point of the parking lot and restrooms) and come up the other side of Lake to make it a loop.

Dogs on a leash are okay.

Taking Children

Not the most exciting for children, they'd probably like the upper reservoir better. For the lower part recommend to create a shorter hike in the area by parking all the way down on Lake next to the lower reservoir and creating a loop around there.
