Bike (and tile-bagging) ride to the local Dairy Queen ("DQ") 2025-04-27
Bike (and tile-bagging) ride to the local Dairy Queen ("DQ") 2025-04-27 Renner and Martha Title: Bike (and tile-bagging) ride to the local Dairy Queen ("DQ") 2025-04-27 Date: 4/27/25, 11:52:58 AM CDT Distance: 11.5 mi Time: 01:19:56 Average Speed: 8.7 mph Max Speed: 17.2 mph Ascent: 142.8 ft Min/Max Altitude: 920.1 ft, 993.3 ft Started: 4/27/25, 11:52:59 AM CDT - (44.96453, -93.45710) Ended: 4/27/25, 1:12:55 PM CDT - (44.96453, -93.45703) After visiting almost all the komoot highlights and AllTrails-curated trails within driving distance, I'm seeking a new challenge. Thanks to @FullyMax , I have discovered a new activity called "tile-hunting," also known as "tile-bagging." This concept is similar to "Peak Bagging" in the British Isles and involves visiting as many OpenStreetMap tiles at zoom level 14 as possible, each measuring 256 x 256 pixels. These tiles are called "Explore Tiles," and conveniently, at my latitude of 45 degrees north, each tile is roughly equivalent to a square mile. When I enter my Komoot tours into Strava (which I registered for with a free account), my activities are automatically uploaded to the StatsHunters app, also free of charge. The StatsHunters app features a grid of the world's tiles, highlighting the ones I have visited. Additionally, by using a StatsHunters extension, I can display the grid and my completed tiles on Komoot. On today's short bike ride, I "bagged" seven new explore tiles. Are there any other "tile-baggers" in the Twin Cities Metropolitan Region? @tcbscott ? Some tile baggers, like FullyMax, have ambitious goals, such as visiting 10,000 contiguous tiles in the Nuremberg and Salzburg regions. My goal is more modest. I want to create a visual display of all the one-square-mile areas (tiles) that I have visited over the years, allowing me to easily identify the tiles I still need to see, either on foot, by cycle, or by watercraft. Creating a Komoot highlight for every tile might be excessive. I will continue to pursue my contrived komoot game of virtually hiking and biking famous routes around the world, such as the South West Coast Path in England, which we are currently exploring. However, unlike these virtual tours, "tile bagging" motivates me to explore more of my local area in real life, revealing places I haven't yet visited.
