Overview

This out-and-back hike in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest links two quiet trailheads along old roadbeds, offering wildflower displays in early summer and views on clear days. Expect solitude or the occasional mountain biker.

Starting at McIlroy Saddle, the trail climbs steadily through second-growth forest along Penny Ridge. From the summit of Monte Carlo, you’ll get partial views of the Lewis River Valley and surrounding ridges. Continue further for a glimpse of Mt. Adams.

Getting Started

From WA-14 near White Salmon, head north on WA-141 Alt/WA-141 (signs for BZ Corner/Trout Lake/Glenwood). Turn left onto Northwestern Lake Road (gravel), which becomes Nestor Peak Road. After 0.4 miles, keep right at the fork, following Buck Creek Valley Road about 3.8 miles, and turn right onto Road B1300. Go 0.9 miles and park where you see the McIlroy Saddle Trailhead.

Taking Children

Appropriate for pre-teen children. Be aware of poison oak and ticks.
