Overview

This is a moderate loop trail shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians in the Washington State Yacolt Burn State Forest. Most of the route passes through previous clear cuts, with little to recommend it unless flowers are in bloom in late spring and early summer. Perhaps 20% of the trail passes through a mature forest of Douglas Fir and Alder versus recent clear cuts. The flower show and views are significantly better on nearby Silver Star

This trail consists of a lollipop loop created by the Tarbell and Silver Shadow Trails. The hike can be started from the Tarbell Trailhead or Rock Creek Campground and Trailhead.

Getting Started

To reach the Tarbell Trailhead from Washington Highway 503, head east on Rock Creek Road, which turns south becoming NE 152nd Avenue, and then turns east again, becoming Lucia Falls Road. Just past Moulton Falls Park take a right at a junction to head east on Sunset Falls Road. Turn south on NE 312th / Dole Valley Road. At a junction, Dole Valley Road will turn south but continue straight on L-1100 to the signed Tarbell Trailhead.

A Washington Discover Pass is required at the trailhead. There is a large parking lot and a bathroom.

Taking Children

Reasonable for children as there are no particularly steep sections or drop-offs. Creek crossings also have bridges suitable for horses.

Not much boot traffic on this hike. The flowers were the highlight of the hike. I wouldn't recommend this as one that I would pilgrimage to on a yearly basis. More like a one-and-done.

Wildflowers, including iris and lupine, were in bloom, but this was not enough to recommend this trail when more interesting trails are available to hike. The trail and bridges were in good condition. We did not encounter any other hikers, no equestrians, and only two bikers when we arrived back at the parking lot. We started from Rock Creek.
