Overview

This is an easy loop trail in Coal Creek Natural Area. It can be accessed from a variety of trailheads including Cinder Mine Trailhead and Red Town Trailhead (across the road from the Red Town trailhead for Cougar Mtn.). It can also be extended for a longer hike by continuing to (or starting from) the Coal Creek West trailhead.

This trail follows Coal Creek and includes the Primrose Loop and lots of interesting displays about the coal mining heritage of the area.

Getting Started

Access the Cinder Mine trailhead off Newcastle Golf Club Road and proceed down a short drive to the parking area. The trail begins just past the parking lot.

If you are accessing the trail at the Red Town trailhead you will need to park in the Cougar Mtn. Red Town parking lot across the road.

Taking Children

This is a wonderful hike for children and families as it is not too long or steep and full of interesting places to check out. Just be sure to stay behind fences and barricades when in the old mining areas.

Started and ended this hike from the Coal Creek West trailhead on Dec. 29th after a snowstorm in the area. We were not the first to hike the trail in the snow, which made for some slippery spots on slopes. Hiking poles and microspikes were very helpful.
