Mount Shavano - Angel of Shavano Snow Route (4/22/17, 06:56:57)
Road to trailhead was clear, no snow on the actual road. Slept at trailhead and started hiking at 7am. Minimal snow until after breaking away from Colorado trail. Made it to the treeline below the angel and start of the snow gully by 9am, then switched to snowshoes (and split board). Used Gaia GPS and previous hiker footprints for navigation which was relatively easy up to and through the angel body. Angel body was in fact steep, and after crossing into the saddle after the two trails got a little confused by not going far enough right. Partner had to switch to boots with crampons due to steepness of the slope about a third of the way up the angel. It was snowing lightly with alternative gas cloud cover and sun the entire time above treeline. Last mile of hike was definitely the slowest. It took us a total of 7 hours to get to the top. Walked around a little up there and then strapped the snowboards on. Followed our general trail down but taking some steeper slopes and avoiding areas of rock crossing. The snowing while we had been hiking gave us about 1-2 inches of powder with only some icy wind blown patches. We stayed in the low gully after exiting the angel body and then cut right to follow the snow as far as we could. Paused to find where to meet up with trail and then boarded it as far as possible. Made it down the whole trail in 2 hours.
