Be prepared for freezing temperatures even in the summertime.

Mauna Loa is an active volcano. The last recorded eruption was in 1984.

The views are breathtaking for much of the hike.

One rock, two rocks, three rocks, four… 1881, 1885, 1935, 1984 are just a few of the many eruptions this active volcano has had in the last 200 years of recorded history. Fifty times Mauna Loa has erupted. Hiking poles are a must for this rocky terrain. As difficult as this hike is, the sunset, stargazing, and sunset are spectacular and the peaceful surroundings magical. If you’re fortunate enough to have the cabin to yourself, five stars. There’s 12 bunks in the cabin and two pit toilets but one is currently full. The biggest challenge is to hike s-l-o-w. Altitude sickness is a sure thing for most. Bring aspirin and drink more fluids than usual.
