Black Butte
Overview
A moderately tracked trail up to the summit of Black Butte. The trail starts out of the parking lot and starts climbing up trough the trees. About halfway up the trail, it starts so traverse across the Butte where you will start getting the first views of the Cascadian volcanoes. Up to the left you can see the fire lookout on the summit. The trail then takes a left turn where it makes the last climb up to the summit. The view is great and you can see Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Fingered Jack, and the Three Sisters. The old, white fire lookout was built in 1923 and is still standing strong.
Getting Started
From Sisters, OR: Travel 6.3 miles northwest on Highway 20, then 3.9 miles north on Forest Service Road 11, then 5.5 miles west on Forest Service Road 1110.
This trailhead provides access to Black Butte Trail and has a very small parking lot with limited capacity. This is a very busy trailhead in the summer with many vehicles and hikers.
Parking at this site requires a recreation pass. Passes are available at this site, but can also be purchased from Forest Service offices or vendors.
Taking Children
This is a good hike for older children and adolescents.
