Black Butte hike
Well, this was an interesting day. When I checked the forest closures a few days ago, the Pacific crest Trail head at Santiam Pass was open. We decided we would hike out to Burley Lakes which is just a few miles and fairly flat. But when we got there the trail head was closed. What? So we decided to continue down the east side to Black Butte. Unfortunately it has been 23 years since I had last hiked the trail and couldn’t recall how to get up to the upper trail head. We ended up at the lower trail head which is about 2000 feet lower and several miles further away from the top. We decided to hike up as far as we could. I wanted to try to make a run for the top so hiked just as fast as I could. It was very hot and sweaty, and I didn’t have any Goo chomps or anything to give me energy so started to hit the wall about a mile from the top. Made it anyway I just spent a couple of minutes on top before coming back down and meeting Claudia who had made it to the upper trailhead. Pretty hazy everywhere. I guess this was my South Sister hike for the year.
