Overview

This is a moderate one way trail to Elliott Knob in George Washington National Forest.

This trail goes by Lead-off Ridge.

The trail is in very good shape. The first couple of miles are mostly smooth packed earth, but further on the trail is mostly very rocky.

The old fire tower on Elliott Knob is a great destination. It is surrounded by a fence, but the gate was open when I was there (April 2021), and the tower offers great views all around.

Getting Started

The trailhead is at Dry Branch Gap, on the Old Parkersburg Turnpike. This is a gravel road after the first half mile or so. Turn off of state route 42 just west of Buffalo Gap. The trailhead has space to park 3 or 4 vehicles just off of the road.

In mid April, the leaves were still off of the trees, giving better views along the trail. Some of the understory trees were starting to blossom. The trail was dry except for a few small spots where seeps created mud.
