We(4 guys) do a backpacking trip at the end of every summer. This ranks as our favorite. It’s a difficult hike from the Santa Fe Ski area via the Windsor trail. We set up camp and then Summit Baldy in the morning. Surreal views from up top including Lake Katherine ( named by Oppenheimer). Of note, firewood is scarce in the Lake Katherine area. On weekdays in off season you’ll have it to yourself.

Start at 10:20 (quite late I thought). Arrived at lake 1:15. Decent pace but had a couple big stops at beginning to deal with drama. Made no stops at water sources before lake. Did the 7 miles there on <1 bottle
Took a bit less than 3 hours on the way out. Tiny bits of snow visible on the cliffs but hella green everywhere else. Windy on the saddle but fair weather otherwise. Filtered once at second stream on way down, total water consumed 2.5L
