Overview

The Storey Burn / Gales Creek loop is a hidden gem in Tillamook State Forest. Given its proximity to the city, it is a relatively low-traffic trail where you can still find some semblance of serenity even on a weekend (in the winter). You'll get sweeping mountain views, a waterfall, and some stream crossings. It's a great, variable hike.

You will share the trail with some mountain bikers, but they're used to hikers. After going under the Graham Bridge, you'll likely be greeted by the popping engines of OHV's on the Spencer Trail.

Getting Started

Park at the Summit Trailhead (large sign off route 6), and walk to the eastern-most side of the lot to begin at the Gales Creek Trail.

Taking Children

This would be a tough trail for children. There are some steep climbs / dropoffs and a crossing at the falls.

Excellent conditions on 1.23.21. A few mountain bikers scattered throughout, and some rowdy OHV folks under the Graham Bridge section, but for the most part, it's a real hidden gem given its proximity to the city.

First 6 miles or so is great, mostly rolling topography, in viewing/ear distance of the creek. Towards the end the highway is pretty loud and there are some ATV trails.

Storey Burn Loop (2/7/21, 11:06:29AM)
Trail was muddy, but in good shape. Started at summit trailhead and decided to get the road crossing over with first. Didn't run into any other humans until we were quite a ways into the hike. Some gunshots were heard in the distance, which displeased my dog. Ran into a few others in the Gales Creek section, but otherwise mostly glorious solitude and the rain didn't really start until we were almost to our vehicle.

Storey Burn to Gales Creek Trail
Hard, lots of ups and downs make the trail very taxing and tiring. No real spots for any sort of backcountry camping.
