Overview

This is a moderate out and back trail in the SW suburbs of Boulder, CO.
The easy approach on crushed gravel road leads up from prairie grass into woods and transitions to increasingly steep single track, rocky trail. This winds around over rocks and through boulders and trees. Switchbacks help to lessen the strain of the climb and keep things interesting. About 2.4 miles in, you reach a short ridgeline that allows you to rest and take in some water, scoot over to the Nebel Horn Peak at 7579' for a grand view across the range and decide whether to return to base or make the climb to Bear Peak at 8458'.
The climb is quite steep (20-50% grade) over talus and scree and roots and at times requires 3 points of contact.
Bear Peak affords you views of Boulder, Denver, Longs and James Peaks and the surrounding forests.
Be extra cautious on the descent, as the loose rock and dusty steps make for precarious footing.
If you didn't notice the stream crossing on the way up, it is particularly cool and attractive on the way down. Be sure to stop for some foot relief and soak the bandanas with cold mountain water before heading back into the sunny final flats. There is also an apple tree just before returning to the trailhead if you are there in the late summer or early fall.

Getting Started

The trail head is at the edge of a neighborhood along Bear Mountain Drive. Park along the street opposite the houses. There are no facilities.

Taking Children

The approach trail is good for kids, especially with the stream crossing, as it provides a cool spot to play and splash around if the water is not running fast. Getting off the gravel road onto the single track is quite steep, with loose rocks and many opportunities for scraped shins and banged up knees. Best to avoid this until they are older and more durable.

This is an alternate route for Bear Peak West Ridge Loop.
