This trail goes by Entrance Station, Doughton Park Campground, Bluffs Gift Shop, Alligator Back, Alligator Back Overlook, Flat Rock Knob, and Bell Knob.

This was a hike that’s been on my bucket list for several years. The Covid pandemic, and more recently Hurricane Helene, disrupted my plans to get the loop knocked out. A buddy and I finally were able to do it last week. We parked at Grassy Gap Fire Road on the Blue Ridge Parkway and spent the first night at Doughton Park Campground. On the second day we descended Cedar Ridge Trail to Basin Cove and spent two nights there (reservations required). Day three was supposed to be a day hike to the Caudill Cabin, but after a night of thunderstorms with heavy rain we spent the day in camp. The final day we hiked up the Grassy Gap Fire Road back to the truck. It’s a nice hike, but if doing it again I’d go in early spring or early October because of mosquitoes and some overgrowth on the fire road.
