Overview

This is a challenging loop trail to Mt Lukens, the highest point in the City of Los Angeles. Ascending from Deukmejian Wilderness Park counterclockwise and initially following Dunsmore Creek, the trail follows the Crescenta View Trail to the summit. The trail is generally well marked and maintained, but the difficulty arises from the very steep ascent of 600 feet per mile, and very little shade covering for most of the route. The ascent takes approximately 4.5 miles, and the descent is slightly over 5 miles. The summit is covered with many radio antennae and equipment buildings, but provides views across the Los Angeles Basin, and east to Mt. Baldy and the other major peaks of the Angeles National Forest. In the summer, there is typically no water available on this trail until the final 1 1/2 miles, when the trail crosses a small stream. In the winter, you may find snow on the trail near the summit. Watch for rattlesnakes on the trail in summer months.

This trail goes by Silver Saddle.

A lovable feature of the park is a series of stunning oaks that are reminiscent of a “Dreaming Tree”. They’re on the easy, straight hike portion that’s just over a mile. Under one of them you can sit and enjoy a picnic or the shade and charming sounds of nature.

If you’re a developing trail runner, it’s best to follow the trail clockwise. Most healthy hiker/runners can enjoyably run 1/3 to 1/2 of the ascent, take a break at the summit and run the entire way down. The descent is exhilarating because most of the trail is narrow with dramatic views and many changes in terrain. You experience everything from an easy dirt service road, to winding, sandy boulders (that you can run around) to 2’ wide dry water courses. The footwork challenges are amazing.

Getting Started

Park at Deukmejian Wilderness Park in the City of Glendale. Arrive early, as the lot fills up early on most days, and usually by 7:00 am on weekends. There are many no parking signs posted on the street entering the park, so use caution if you park on the street. The entire park closes and is gated 1 hour after sunset.

This a nice strenuous hike, with a good distance and elevation gain. Unfortunately the antennas at the top have warnings that made me quite aware that this is not a particularly safe place to be hiking.

Fair amount of free parking with a bathroom. Trail is totally exposed and a decent amount of climbing up dirt, scree, and talus. There are views of Glendale, but nothing spectacular. Going down, there are a couple of turn offs that are marked by a post but would be easy to miss. Small sections are fairly steep. Decent workout, but for sure would not want to do on a hot summer day because there is absolutely no shade.

Good idea to start this hike first thing in the morning. Not much shade once the sun is up.

The hike right out of the parking lot aseme’s through a nature center full of wildflowers. In fact, there were dozens of various wildflowers along the hike. The first couple of miles, going counterclockwise, was relentlessly uphill. Then the elevation gain moderates near the peak. Great views of the Los Angeles basin and back down into Tujunga Canyon.

I wouldn't rate it difficult, at least not in any technical sense. I mean, yeah, it's a long walk of nearly ten miles and close to 3,000 foot elevation gain, but there's a very good trail and it's hard to get lost. Took me just over four hours and enjoyed lunch on the top. Perfect day for it with cool mists covering the summit most of the way up and cool mists blowing up the sides of the hills. Once past the main Deukmejian trails you'll pass someone going the other way maybe every ten minutes or so. Definitely do the loop. No sense in going back the same way you came. See more.

Hike Mt Lukens From Deukmejian Wilderness Park
The hike to Mt Lukens, the highest point in the city of LA at 5,066 ft, is a fun one that doesn't get as much traffic as other more popular Southern California hikes. It's a tough 10 mile loop with about 3,900 ft of total climbing, and you're rewarded with great views and pristine wilderness, all within the city of LA.

Mt Luken Loop
Very exposed, savor the shade when you can get it. The views on the trail are good but the top is underwhelming. I did the clockwise loop, up was well marked and straightforward. Down had dense shrub at times and I lost the trail once or twice. I went with pants and long sleeves and definitely didn’t regret it.

We went at a moderate pace. Between the stop at the top and a break for lunch on the way down we probably added 30 or 40 minutes. Great views of the city
