This is a difficult out and back trail to Mount Defiance in Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.
This trail goes by Mount Rainier View and Ira Spring Trail.

Nice hike. It's been a few years since I've done this popular hike. Dec.2 @ 8:00am start with the parking lot half full. I took the old Mason Lake trail up to avoid the Ira Springs trail and the groups ahead of me. About 1/2 up to the lake the snow started. One has to be careful crossing the creek and traveling on the boulders with the light snow covering. Once I hit the main trail again it was well packed down. About 6 people headed up to Defiance before me so the trail was okay and I didn't wear gaitors or micro-spikes. The top was in the clouds so no views. I took the Ira Springs trail down from Mason Lake. On my way down I met a number of people heading up and the parking lot was full when I go back.

I’ve always wanted to do this one, and it did not disappoint! It was a hot day, and Leslie struggled. We got a little off trail after Mason Lake, but were soon working our way up Defiance. There is a steep wooded section that eventually broke out into a beautiful wildflower meadow that traversed the south flank of Defiance. The trail then heads steeply north. The 360 views from the summit are stunning, with mountains and lakes.

With Susan, Kristen and lobo. Finally got up to outstanding peak, 360 degree views of rainier, baker and Adams. Rugged scramble final 500 feet to top. Outstanding clear day. Susan turned around at mason lake.
