Overview

This is a fairly easy out and back trail in Roosevelt National Forest. To keep a total distance of 4 miles, you must turn back when you reach the Y intersection at the 2 mile mark. Otherwise, you'll continue on to the loop, which adds ~ 4 more miles to the hike, in addition to 500+' more elevation gain. The trail was hit hard by a fire in 2012 and as a result, it's very exposed. The hike is a beautiful stroll with many stream crossings but since there is little to no cover on the trail, be mindful of the temperature before setting out. It's very easy to overheat (pets too!) on this trail. Watch out for rattlesnakes along the trail.

Getting Started

The parking lot is on the North side of the road, 10 1/2 miles past the intersection of Colorado 14 and Highway 287. There's room for 22 vehicles in the parking lot. It's a pretty popular trail due to its vicinity to Ft. Collins so get here early to assure there's parking.

Taking Children

Kids will love the stream crossings but can get cranky in the heat of the day on this trail. Aside from the heat and rattlesnakes, it's a very kid friendly trail.

Full exposure for most of the trail. Very hot. The dirt gets hot once the temp goes above 74 or so, so watch your pups feet. The trail is beautiful and there are some nice stream crossings but this trail is better enjoyed during cooler weather than summer sun.
