This is a classic hike in the Jemez Mountains that follows the East Fork of the Jemez River as it descends a majestic canyon to meet San Antonio Creek and form the Jemez River near Battleship Rock. The hike includes multiple interesting features including Jemez Falls (70 feet drop), McCauley Warm Springs ( about 100 degrees F where it comes out of the hillside, but not as hot in the dammed up pools below; beautiful forested setting), and Battleship Rock (towering basalt rock formation and cliffs). Forest Road accesses and Forest Service Camprounds were still closed and locked at the time of year we did this hike, so it was a tranquil time. It is busier in the summer to be sure. We made this a one-way hike down elevation by putting a car at the Battleship Rock trailhead and driving a second car up to the East Fork trailhead where we started from. Nice huevos rancheros and elk sausage breakfast burrito after the hike in nearby Jemez Springs.
