Edit to previous comment: on the path up to the Falls it is a good idea to pay particular attention to the pink blazes marking the path. Several places the path looks like it continues straight but instead veers off sharply uphill, downhill or even doubles back on itself. These blazes are typically on trees but in the steeper sections can be found on rocks instead. Forewarned is forearmed :-)

The hike down into the Gorge and back up is what makes this a rugged hike. The rest of the loop is moderate. Descent is steep but the trail is easy to follow and not particularly rocky. The trail up is totally different. It is almost as steep as it was coming down but more interesting as it followed a rock cliff incorporating ladders in some of the steeper sections to assist in climbing. It was challenging enough that in a couple of sections we had to help our dogs up over some of the obstacles and we had to resort to crawling vs. walking to navigate. The scenery in Jan. was wonderful, the air crisp and cold, and all in all a good hard hike we were glad we did and just as glad when we made it back to the truck.
