Hidden Canyon in Henderson NV, Foothills Area This hike starts at the end of Essex Street. Continue driving up the dirt road about 1/4 of a mile and park in the small parking area next to the River Mountain Bike Trail. Cross over the paved bike trail and follow the dirt path up the hill. You can go down towards the water tank or up the dirt road. If you go down turn right just before the water tank and follow the fence line in the wash until you get to a road. The road will take you up and then down into the large wash. Turn right and follow the wash up until you get to the hidden canyon on the left. This part of the hike is the most spectacular. You enter a canyon with high walls and humongous boulders. There are lots of hiding places in the boulders. You can even go under several of them. You will find chairs and other items left by homeless people living here. This part of the canyon is only about 1/4 mile. Follow the canyon up over the ridge until you come to a dirt road. Turn around and the view of Las Vegas is impressive. There are many dirt roads in this area to explore. We followed the road straight until it split and then took the right path which eventually took us to a high point where we could see the back of Radar Mountain in Boulder City, Henderson, and Mount Charleston. Hiking was easy with few obstacles except in the canyon where you had to a few easy scrambles. The ascent was so gradual in most places, you didn't really notice it. This is one of my favorite hikes because it is so close to town yet feel so remote. I have seen bighorn sheep, large owls, and lots of small animals in this area.
