Today we’ve discovered the extraordinary lava formations of Skælingar. Poised on the banks of the Skaftá river, Skælingar is a place that will challenge your imagination. We’ve made our way through the narrow Hvanngil canyon, along a black-ish stream tainted with volcanic sediment, until we reach the base of the impressive three peaked Uxatindar mountain. As we emerge from the canyon, small lava formations appear to grow alongside the trail—a small pumpkin sized patch at first, to hip-high bushes, into a full blown lava forest. Enormous pillars sprout from the ground two to three meters overhead. Conglomerate arches and metamorphic boils take indescribable shapes, as if molded by creatures from another dimension. Legend has it these lava formations were an army of trolls so caught up in battle they petrified under the light of the rising sun.
