GAIAgps ascent computation worked perfect this time because ascents were constant and gradual. Post-processing checks with other sources agreed exactly with GAIA. However, when I converted to LookUpElevations in GAIA using their digital elevation model, the ascent total did not change. So it appears to me that GAIAgps on iOs uses satellites to get Lat/Long, then looks up the position on an earth model to determine the ground surface elevation.
