Bald Mtn from Lolo Pass Rd (All Notes)

Wildflowers on the slope at major peak, and a Nucka and bald hip rose mini-meadow also booming. Rhodadendrons past peak in first stretch, only a few remaining blooms. (Early hot spring this year; no snow) First 1.6 miles stern moderate uphill, then gently rolling thereafter. Six cars at trailhead on sunny Wednesday, moderate number of people on trail by mid-afternoon, but not crowded. Did loop clockwise per AllTrails, but prefer counterclockwise.

Alway nice; marquee view of Hood, flower slope and Muddy Fork as you round Bald Mountain (going CCW). Snow still over trail in places, especially north side of Bald Mtn made for slow going; trail completely obscured, needed GPS for reassurance. Fawn lilies blooming; rhododendrons looked healthy after last year's heat event, but blooms were sparse. Only one car at trailhead, no one between trailhead andTop Spur junction, then only a handful around Bald Mtn. Trail >75% shade/partial shade; didn't need sticks.

Very nice walk. First 2 miles a steady climb, but not too bad. Nice variety of flora, excellent view of Hood as you circle around Bald Mtn. Flowers on slope here were spectacular in July, but past in mid-August. Steep spur to summit Bald Mtn worthwhile for view. Not many good lunch spots.
VERY busy on nice Saturday afternoon in August; 50+ cars at trailhead, pass other hikers every few minutes.
