Nice end-of-summer day today -- sunny and 70s, but very pleasant in the shade of the woods. This is a lovely route with varied terrain and lots of ups and downs. From the fire road, we broke off to a narrow trail following Rum Rock Lake, then went south on an unmarked trail though a low lying area (dry at this time of year) and up over whalebacks to meet up with the Luce Trail, which we followed west back to the fire road. Whalebacks made for slow going but were not too difficult. Luce trail was well marked most of the way, but, like last year, we still lost it in a few spots, where it crossed large whalebacks. A little scouting put us back on course and we marked those spots with 2 orange dots to help with the Cross Cape Hike. Total distance was 2.9 miles, completed in just under 2 hours, as predicted. Small group today - just 10! Led by Phil & Monica.
