Tincup Pass

13.0 mi

The road climbs on 267 from St Elmo up to 12100 ft at the top of the Pass. Excellent campsites on the east (San Isabel) side and almost none on the North (Gunnison) side of the continental divide. Technical on the descent but mostly rocky and beautiful. Barely open on July 27 with snow at the top of the Pass only allowing for one car to go through.

From highway 285 to campsite on rough road

17.0 mi

CR 162 leaves pavement a few miles off the highway and then you have two options around marker 1. Turn right immediately after Write lakes to CR 292 and the road roughens but it is much more interesting. On your left you’ll see Alpine lake and you will climb steeply. Low 4wd helps in some sections but it’s not a must. On the left, there are sections of steep drops so don’t lean hard on driver. Beware there’s private property on both sides of the road until you reach Iron City, the graveyard and the campground. Past that is beautiful St Elmo with its ghost town vibe and feel. Before the end of town turn right to follow CR 267. You’ll find a parking lot and a crossroads. TAKE RIGHT towards Tincup Pass Rd CR 267. Low gear and disconnects are a good idea. After about 100 yds there’s a trailhead for the CDT and after that you can camp roadside.
