Beautiful day in February and warm! Definitely needed spikes for lots of ice on the trail but no need for snow shoes.
Barr Trail Hike (8/29/15, 4:33:56AM)
Planned on leaving early from Manitou Springs with the hopes of hiking to the top of Pikes Peak and return. Arrived at the Barr Trail parking lot (very small) at about 4:15 AM and there were only 2 or 3 spots open. There is a kiosk at the trail head to pay for parking ($5).
If you plan on doing the hike, be sure to not get off the trail by accident in the dark. There was one section where I wandered to the incline instead of making a sharp left and staying on the trail. Zoom in on the map and you can see a section that crosses a dashed line (its labeled "incline"). If you cross it, turn around to stay on the Barr trail.
At mile 6, I had a terrible pop in my calf and had to turn around and head back. This is an easy trail but if you plan to summit Pikes peak its a pretty grueling distance (11 miles). Hopefully I can try again in a few weeks or may wait until next spring.

Grays peak and Torreys peak hike
My son and daughter joined me for a hike of Grays and Torreys peaks. The weather was great. My kids weren't interested in hiking Torreys so I did that one by myself. I considered returning from the top of Torreys on the eastern ridge (class 3). Decided it looked a little too dicey and returned the safer south route down the mountain.
