Peaks of Otter - Fallingwater Cascades

1.4 mi

My wife and I headed out on the Blue Ridge Parkway to celebrate my birthday.  This was the first of our three hikes that day.  This is a nice, fairly easy loop to a pretty waterfall.

Apple Orchard Mountain

1.8 mi

My wife and I spent some time driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway to celebrate my birthday.  This was the second of three hikes.  We hiked a road to the top of the mountain and took the AT back down.  This is the most prominent mountain in Virginia.

Humpback Rocks

4.1 mi

Humpback Rocks is a set of nice rock formations that gives a great reward with a little bit of effort.  The parking area is off of the Blue Ridge Parkway.  There is a short, but steep rocky trail that leads to the summit, for those looking for the quickest route.  I took a blue-blazed trail that connects to the AT.  Go north on the AT until you reach a sign for the rocks.  I then took the main trail down completing the loop.  There is also a visitors center at Humpback Rocks, with some cultural displays.

Roaring Run

This is a short fun hike to a beautiful waterfall.  There are also many slides along the way should one desire to get in the water.  My wife and kid accompanied me and we had a great time.

The David Smith Trail is a part of the Roanoke River Greenway.  At this time, it acts as a stand alone section.  There is a skate park, ball fields, and a playground nearby.

Salem City Highpoint

98 ft

Based on new annexed lines for the City of Salem, Virginia, I believe this to be the highest point in the city.  COHP.org places the highpoint to the southeast, but this was based on older city lines from topo maps.  The old point involved a bit more work to reach.  For this point, one can drive on a public road, jump out of the car and bag the point.  There is a metal stake, which I believe indicates a property line and highest point.

Rhode Island State Highpoint - Jerimoth Hill

993 ft

On the way home from a wedding, some of my family stopped by the highpoint for Rhode Island.  The trail is open to the public from 8-4 everyday, but please stay on the trail and respect the property rights of the adjacent owners.  The trail is well marked and there are also a few USGS markers.

New Hampshire State Highpoint - Mt. Washington via the Auto Road

15.8 mi

Several of my family members decided to ascend Mt. Washington while in New Hampshire for a wedding.  We took the Auto Road to almost the summit.  The last 20 feet or so you have to go by foot, but it was no cake walk.  50-60 mph winds and cold temperatures made the summit quite exciting.  Those winds are nothing compare to the record breaking 231 mph wind speed that was recorded in the 1930s, the highest recorded ground windfall recorded to date.  Mt. Washington is truly a unique mountain.

After ascending Mt. Washington via the Auto Road, this is a nice quick sidetrip to some beautiful falls that are fed by streams coming off of Washington.

Delaware State Highpoint - Ebright Azimuth

3,193 ft

This track is in the vicinity of the Delaware State Highpoint.  The exact location is debated.  If you look like you are looking for the highpoint, you very well may run into a very nice local lady who will take you around and snap your picture.  Be sure to sign her log book.  There are several benchmarks to find and a Delaware/Pennsylvania Stateline marker.
