Kite Lake trail is an enjoyable 6 mile in-and-out run. It is less traveled than many of the Jeep trails closer to Silverton, but we did meet both ATV and Jeep traffic.

From the well-preserved Mayflower Mill just north of Silverton, across the Animas River, and up into Arrastra Gulch, threads a still-standing aerial tramline, complete with swinging ore buckets suspended in time—all that remains of one of Silverton’s greatest mining operations of the 20th century.

Hurricane Basin 2.0

Hurricane Basin is an easy, interesting Jeep trail to a beautiful basin. It is maintained by Hinsdale County and is usually in good condition.

The main attractions are scenery and an old boarding house. The old boarding house and an adjoining cabin were being stabilized by HistoriCorps in 2014.
