This trail is in wonderful condition right now with just a few muddy patches and no snow left to cross. It's definitely a popular one on summer weekends - there were probably 200 cars at the trailhead at 10:00am on a Saturday, stretching all the way back to the interstate.

Unlike some local trails the climb is steady but more gradual. Lots of loose rocks so wear good shoes. The Katwalk is really a nice treat to look forward to.

This is a straight forward loop with a highly recommended spur to Millers Peak for a front row view of the Enchantments and the Teanaway. The down side of this trail is that it is shared with mountain bikes and dirt bikes which is very annoying when you are seeking the peace and quiet of nature.

Excellent hike! The mellow hike along a beautiful river for half the way warms up the body and provides a nice introduction to the area, and the day before the rigours of the straight up second half, which is also very beautiful with lots of giant trees, and the fantastic, 360 view from the top of the mountain. The upper slopes are covered with gentle, pretty flowers, lots of rock outcroppings and streams. Snow above 5k was slushy, but firm enough for a easy walk up. The scramble to the top can be started from 2 additional gullies along with the standard counter-clockwise corkscrew route. But everything is very loose! The summit register is in a dire need of a 1.5" pvc female cap! The views are superb, scramble is short and loose, 4*.

The road to this trail is very passable but there are many pot holes and loose gravel so drive carefully. It is at most a 20 mile per hour road for almost 3 miles. I chose to follow the Ira Spring Memorial Trail, which is very well maintained, and then ascend the Bandera Mountain Trail. I went as far as I could make out the trail which put me at 5001 feet which is a 3048 foot elevation change from where I began. The first part of the Bandera Mountain Trail is very steep, rated difficult, and gains close to 1000 feet in elevation as you navigate through a boulder field for about .25 mile, after that it becomes easier to manage. I then returned and followed the rest of the Ira Spring Trail to Mason Lake which was beautiful but very crowded with people. I didn’t encounter many bugs and everyone on the trail was kind, jovial, and conversational.

Beautiful weather, lots of views as you get closer to the lakes. The 360 view on top of Mount Defiance is absolutely stunning with excellent views of Mt. Rainier. Would recommend avoiding the old lake trail until the snow clears off the boulder field. The snow on the boulders makes it really easy to post hole and possibly twist an ankle.

Very well maintained trail. Traffic noise from I-90 is a bit bothersome at start in places for first half. Big day to go to the summit. Great views, it's a ridge summit with some trees. Snow over last mile was difficult, cleats recommended. Upper half of the trail is along an old logging road.

Visited on Monday 4/22/19. Ample parking. It was moderately busy. Saw a kayaker fishing. Took a break in hiking to eat lunch by a tree next to the lake and I soaked my feet in the water for a bit. Beautiful area and lots of hiking options. After hiked rattlesnake ledge. Lots of people on this trail. I'd call this hike easy to moderate. Hiked 4.8 miles, 1211 elevation gain, 3hrs16mins hiking time. Hiked only to the first ledge. Did this trail after we had hiked Mt. Si via Teneriffe road trail. Porta potties at trailhead were the most clean. Vaulted toilets were smelly, it was also later in the day when we started. Had about 10 or 15 minutes on the ledge and then the rain started and it was getting socked in fast.

Trail in good condition overall. Lower portion generally dry with cobbles. Mid section has running water and snow still hanging in at 3800; and spikes strongly suggested for upper trail. Great views to the south.

Started at about 0930 with about 10 other vehicles parked along the road. During the winter Denny Creek Road is blocked off and adds about 2 miles to the hike. Bring traction for your shoes such as micro spikes as it gets pretty slippery they the whole hike. Once you get to Denny Creek Campground the trail to Franklin Falls is just under 2 miles further up. Great views along the way of crystal clear rivers, snow covered mountains and trees. Northwest Forest Pass required.

Did this hike in late June and did not luck out with the weather. Cloudy and rainy most of the time and once I got up to the ridge there were some strong winds. On the plus side I didn't see another person the entire hike or even another car at the trailhead. Great views of Cle Elum Lake and the surrounding area.

Nice hike. It's been a few years since I've done this popular hike. Dec.2 @ 8:00am start with the parking lot half full. I took the old Mason Lake trail up to avoid the Ira Springs trail and the groups ahead of me. About 1/2 up to the lake the snow started. One has to be careful crossing the creek and traveling on the boulders with the light snow covering. Once I hit the main trail again it was well packed down. About 6 people headed up to Defiance before me so the trail was okay and I didn't wear gaitors or micro-spikes. The top was in the clouds so no views. I took the Ira Springs trail down from Mason Lake. On my way down I met a number of people heading up and the parking lot was full when I go back.

The trail was closed during the summer of 2018 for trail work. Though I hadn't been on the trail prior, the current trail has plenty of signs and is easy to follow. The trail work also rerouted a small section on the trail from the map but it's hard to get off trail. Consider hiking to the balcony for a shorter hike. I'm still sore a couple days after hiking as the top section gets steeper towards the top and follows old mining roads. From the top, you can see distant view of Rainier and Baker.

Hit the trail at 8:45 this morning. Larches are a little past their prime but still beautiful. The hike itself took 5 hours, plus an hour of resting in Headlight Basin and at Lake Ingalls. Lots of people in the afternoon were coming up as we were coming down, so we had to pull over a lot on some of the sketchy ridge sections. Most everyone was nice though, and it was nice to see no dogs breaking the rules. Sadly, no goat sightings, but lots of pikas were chirping.

What a day to spend in this beautiful fall weather! Original plan was a round trip to Kendall Katwalk and back, but we still had energy left to continue on to Ridge Lake. Stopped right after the Katwalk for lunch and the views which were amazing! Trail is a gradual climb over the 6 miles up so not too many rest stops. After the Katwalk the terrain is so much different and the fall colors really popped out. So beautiful and fresh. Sat down at Ridge Lake for about an hour just enjoying the moment. Wandered around the lake a bit and found some more amazing views of the cascades. The hike back wasn’t too bad, clouds started to roll in, but no rain. Lots of people on the trail, it was a Saturday after all. Found a parking spot with no issue by 9am. When we left there were cars parked along the side roads.

This is a really popular hike, but what can I say? I just don't love it... Yes, it has beautiful views from various lookout points, but I just don't appreciate it as much as the other super popular hikes in the area (Little Si, for example, that has such gorgeous woods). If you're looking for something not too hard, with nice views and not far from the city, this isn't a bad choice. I do like that there's a lake at the bottom for swimming... I don't love the quantity of people, who seem to be more squished together at the viewpoints than on other trails. That said, if you continue further up, you'll have more space to yourself.

My two sisters and I did Rachel Lake as a backpacking trip, and had a great time! The lake itself is like many of the other alpine lakes in the area (meaning, it's gorgeous and makes for a great swimming spot!). There was still snow on the far side of the lake earlier in the summer, and only a couple other campers. Felt surprisingly secluded, though it's a really popular hiking spot. I tried hiking it in the early spring once, and found we were walking on a snow bridge over a fast flowing creek—yikes. Super dangerous. In hindsight, it was pretty scary, so use caution if there's snow on the ground. Otherwise, huff and puff your way up the 4 miles, and enjoy the great views of surrounding peaks!

In early June, a few friends and I hiked up to Mason Lake, which I hadn't yet been to though it's really close to home (Seattle). I thought it might be too swamped with families for my liking (and indeed it was packed with kids, adults and dogs alike), but it was still a nice, fast-ish Sunday escape from the city. The lake itself was mostly covered in a thin crust of ice, which made for one cold, refreshing swim, much needed after the exertion of getting up there! Maybe it was just my rubbery winterized legs, but I actually found the hike a lot more tiring than I expected, with plenty of switchbacks through very pretty forests, alpine meadows and some wildflowers. Next time, I'd like to go mid-week and connect the trail to some of the tracks that extend further into the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, over several days or a week. Looking at the map here, it looks like there are plenty of opportunities for further exploration in less populated areas.

Bean Creek Trail is a nice trail to explore the Teanaway area. Scramble up to Bean Peak when the trail ends and be rewarded with views of the Mount Stuart range. Good choice if the weather on the west side of the mountain crest is rainy.

Hike is good for scoping out climbing areas and for a close-to-Seattle hike where you don't want to take all day. The view is decent from the top. Turns for the trail are mainly marked but don't forget to take a description of the turns or a map with the trail to follow with you.
