What a hunt! Lots to sniff, Timber tigers to chase, and water for fetch! The creek was real high this go around- I made it across with no help from mom because I’m 55lbs and like to swim(mom says it’s my lab) but Oliver had to be carried my mom since he is only 25lbs- how embarrassing. The water was almost half way up mom too! And then mom wouldn’t throw fetch sticks because she thought I couldn’t handle it.
Lots of planties on the trail- I was making tunnels in the bottom but mom was getting whacked in the face by branches.

My friend got bit by a rattlesnake late May 2023 in this area. Beware!
She thinks wearing loose long pants saved her from a maybe fatal situation.

The final gear run through before multi-day trips was a 1 night stay at Smith Rock. Late April had surprise … hot sunny afternoon on day 1, cold night, and on day 2, snow and sleet morning, then clouds and wind breaking into afternoon sunshine.
The Plan: Arrive Tuesday afternoon and hike by 2pm down river and around the corner and back. Camp at Bivouac area (Bivy), and head to Grey Butte morning of day 2 and then back and heading home by 2pm. (Map Plan)

Nice loop, but not very isolated, and a lot of cattle in the area. Several gorgeous areas with great views of the cascades. Would hike again if asked, but not keeping it on the list

A gorgeous trail to the confluence of the Deschutes & Whychus Creek. The hike takes you from the rim to the creek, passing many interesting rock formations, crossing through (bring sandals/water shoes) Whychus creek with great views of the canyon. A few overgrown spots closer to the confluence but nothing crazy. Loved it, was in awe of the geology all afternoon!
