Overview

Washita Battlefield National Historic Site is located in the high plains of Oklahoma near the town of Cheyenne. It is the site of surprise attack by Lt. Col. George A. Custer and the 7th Calvary on the winter camp of Cheyenne Native Americans. The loop is a partially paved, easy to walk figure eight loop. Interpretive information along the way is accessed by cell phone. The trail is a thought-provoking look at how Native Americans were treated after the Civil War.

Getting Started

Stop at the Visitor Center about mile to the east to pick up a map. The trailhead is new, well-marked, and with room for a dozen cars and a couple RVs. The paved trail starts at the kiosk near the parking area.
